Substance Abuse Initiatives in Danville, VA

In an effort to boost awareness around the dangers of opioid abuse and better prevent deadly overdoses, the state of Virginia developed the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE) program. Since 2013, the OONE program has provided training to local residents on how to best recognize an opioid overdose and how to effectively treat it using the opioid antagonist, Naloxone.

Naloxone is an emergency medication used during opioid overdoses to reverse its deadly side effects and save lives. The OONE program's Lay Rescuer training covers an understanding of opioids, how overdoses can occur, the risk factors of overdose, and how to effectively respond using Naloxone administration. Under a Virginia standing order, pharmacists are allowed to dispense Naloxone without a prescription to individuals and families of those at risk of overdose.
