Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Cypress, CA

In recent times, law enforcement has witnessed an increase in illegal fentanyl sales involving the use of social media and online communication platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Snapchat. In early 2023, Orange County lawmakers introduced a new bill aimed at reducing the online sale of illegal drugs throughout Cypress and the surrounding California state.

Assembly Bill 1027, which was later passed in October 2023, now requires these online platforms to create and post a policy prohibiting the use of their platforms to distribute illicit controlled substances. Furthermore, these online networks will be further required to document any content that has been taken down in violation of this policy for a period of 90 days. With this data, law enforcement can better navigate criminal investigations to drive fentanyl sales down.

Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Cypress, CA

Governor Gavin Newsom recently worked alongside Orange County officials to implement new substance abuse and mental health treatment strategies under the Community Assistance, Recover, and Empowerment (CARE) Act. This first-in-the-nation program will work to provide mental health and substance abuse resources to vulnerable populations, including the homeless and those with recurrent incarceration in Cypress and the surrounding state.

Under the new framework, Orange County stakeholders will focus heavily on Cypress-area and surrounding county residents currently suffering from psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Through CARE, these high-risk patients can gain timely access to robust substance abuse and mental health treatment services, as well as housing resources, for well-rounded support. In September 2023, the CARE Program was officially launched in Orange County.
