Almost every city in Rhode Island experienced a significant increase in drug overdoses in 2020; Cranston was among some of the highest. According to recent data, 72 percent of all overdoses in Rhode Island in 2020 were caused by illicit drugs. Every age group experienced increased drug use, and people between 45 and 54 experienced the most considerable increase.
Fentanyl was involved in at least 75 percent of all overdoses in 2020, whereas it was only involved in about 5 percent of overdose deaths in 2012. Prescription drugs accounted for about 9 percent of overdose deaths.

Police seized three kilos of methamphetamine and arrested Cranston man
Rhode Island State Police arrested a 43-year-old man from Cranston after they found three kilos of methamphetamine in his possession. Police consider this a major success as they took such a huge amount of substances off the streets. In addition to methamphetamine, police also seized 254.5 grams of cocaine, 25.6 grams of fentanyl, and more than thirteen thousand in cash. According to authorities, the man could face life in prison and millions in fines if he is convicted.
