In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic spiked in the United States of America, it also dramatically affected the number of deaths from drugs or alcohol. Between 2019 to 2020, California experienced a 32 percent increase in drug and alcohol-related deaths. Orange County experienced even higher numbers, with a 34 percent increase in drug and alcohol fatalities.
Experts believe that people started to use alcohol and drugs more because of the negative social shifts that the pandemic brought on, causing people to feel more isolated and contributing to mental health struggles. People who had achieved sobriety for years began to relapse, and treatments and support groups were not as available due to social distancing regulations. Many Californians used drugs while home alone, which often led to drug overdoses. With no one around to help, deaths rose quickly.
Police seized more than 60 pounds of methamphetamine in Costa Mesa
This drug bust was a significant success for police in Costa Mesa. Authorities found and seized over 60 pounds of methamphetamine, 1,300 fentanyl pills, 14 grams of cocaine, and 54 grams of fentanyl.
The chief of the police department expressed that they are proud to remove such a large quantity of drugs from the streets because it likely saved hundreds of lives. Currently, there is no further information as the investigation is still ongoing.
