Corona, CA: Drug abuse trends
Corona is part of Riverside County, which struggles with many overdoses involving fentanyl. In 2016, Riverside County had two overdoses related to fentanyl. In 2020, the number rose sharply to 279 fentanyl-related deaths out of 686 fatal overdoses in the County.
According to information from the Riverside County Coroner, fentanyl is becoming a significant factor in overdose. Fentanyl is a medication prescribed for chronic pain, which is about fifty times stronger than morphine. It is frequently abused and has become a substantial issue in the county. Since fentanyl is usually laced into other drugs without the knowledge of the people using them, it is easy for people to overdose accidentally. This year, the District Attorney of Riverside County expects fentanyl-related deaths to reach between 500 and 600.
Currently, 23.1 out of every 100,000 Riverside County residents die from a drug overdose. California has been facing these astounding numbers for years and ranks as the number one state for the highest drug overdoses in the USA.
Thousands of drugs containing fentanyl seized in Riverside County
In June, Riverside County Gang Impact Team (GIT) seized thousands of fentanyl pills and seven kilograms of powdered drugs with a street value of over 1.5 million dollars. Two milligrams of fentanyl can cause a deadly overdose. For perspective, a single teaspoon of the drug usually has about 5,000 milligrams.
Although fentanyl is not a concern exclusive to California, Riverside County has certainly felt the impact of this fatal drug in the community.
