High-risk patients include those taking high-dose opioids, taking other high-risk medications, or having a history of substance abuse.
Naloxone is an opioid antagonist medication often used in the event of an opioid overdose to reverse deadly side effects. While there is a current New York standing order that allows pharmacists to dispense Naloxone to anyone at risk without a prescription, this mandate forces doctors to ensure patients possess Naloxone when using opioids to more proactively prevent deadly opioid overdose.
