Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Columbus, IN
In July 2023, local law enforcement announced the arrest of eight Columbus residents following an ongoing drug-related investigation. The investigation was led by the Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET), the Intelligence-Led Policing Unit (ILP), and the Columbus Police Department Uniform Division. According to reports, the investigation first began after numerous tips and complaints were reported regarding suspicious narcotics activity occurring at the 1900 block of Keller Avenue.
Three main suspects were identified as probable narcotics dealers during the investigation, ultimately leading to a search warrant being executed on the home. Inside the home, Columbus law enforcement discovered various amounts of crack cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana. The three main suspects alongside six other home occupants were arrested and charged with a variety of charges, including felony narcotics possession and maintaining a common nuisance.
Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Columbus, IN
Following a Community Health Needs Assessment in 2015, substance abuse was identified as the leading community health concern in Bartholomew County. To curb this concern, the Alliance for Substance Abuse Progress (ASAP) of Bartholomew County follows a mission to identify and implement a recovery system that can be used by local residents, including Columbus citizens.
