Columbia, Maryland: Drug abuse trends
Maryland has seen significant progress in recent years regarding drug overdose deaths. However, the COVID-19 pandemic was a setback for the state because it exacerbated the opioid epidemic due to job loss, increased mental health challenges, and lower recovery and treatment services availability. Columbia falls under Howard County, which experienced a 43 percent increase in deadly opioid overdoses in 2020 compared to 2019. In 2020, Howard County and the state of Maryland experienced a major increase in overdoses and hit its highest opioid fatality at over 2,500 deaths.
Fortunately, the situation improved in 2021 when the non-fatal overdoses decreased by ten percent and the fatal overdoses decreased by 57 percent in Howard County. The county reported that everybody who experienced non-fatal overdoses had received Narcan—a drug that can reverse overdose effects.
