Collinsville, IL - Drug Testing

Substance Abuse Trends for the City of Collinsville

A disturbing new trend is emerging in the Collinsville area. In early 2023, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a warning based on at least five overdose deaths in Madison County connected to the use of an animal tranquilizer that is commonly known as the "zombie drug." Xylazine, also known as "trank" is being mixed with fentanyl and other opiates, putting users at greater risk of fatal drug poisoning. Three of the xylazine-related Madison County deaths occurred in 2022 and two more have occurred as of the first quarter of 2023.

DEA Administrator Anne Milgram states that xylazine is "the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced," noting that it is even deadlier than fentanyl.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Collinsville

The state of Illinois has issued a Statewide Naloxone Standing Order, which allows pharmacies and opioid overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) programs to distribute naloxone to anyone who requests it, as long as their intent is to respond to suspected overdoses. Prescriptions are not required, but individuals are required to complete approved training and education before receiving access to the kits. Collinsville residents can receive naloxone from their local CVS, Walgreens, or the Collinsville Police Department. In Madison County, Chestnut Health Systems also distributes naloxone free of charge and provides the required training.
