Life and People in Cleveland
Growing up in Cleveland, Tennessee, Stephen Staley was exposed to substance abuse from a young age. He recalls seeing his father smoking methamphetamine when he was just 12 years old and thinking "It was the coolest thing." At age 16, he began drinking alcohol and using marijuana, and by 18, he was experimenting with amphetamines. At 19, he was arrested for DUI, and within 7 months, he was an IV methamphetamine user.
After several brushes with the law and a long list of charges, he was given a second chance, thanks to his county's drug court program. In March of 2022, Stanley marked one year of being clean and sober. While he is still only about halfway through his sentence, he says he is "the happiest I've ever been" and is "climbing slowly back to the top."
