Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Cleveland Heights DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Facts about DNA Testing in Cleveland Heights OH
Cleveland Heights Library Hosted 'Wild World of DNA Testing' Seminar
Jessica Robinson, a local history librarian, hosted a seminar entitled 'The Wild World of DNA Testing' at the Cleveland Heights library in 2019. Robinson became interested in the stories told by DNA testing after seeing how much intergenerational family history could be revealed with a single cheek swab. These revelations can lead to a stronger sense of self, she says, especially for those who are "looking for some sort of connection to something that goes a little deeper."
Robinson's course covered the basics of what DNA is biologically speaking and how it works in the natural world. She also reviewed today's DNA testing options and the risks associated with joining a public database or learning a family secret. The Heights Library created a mini podcast episode to advertise the seminar as well.
Cleveland Heights Native Contributed to Breakthrough DNA Discovery
Cleveland Heights was the home of the famous geneticist Martha Cowles Chase. She worked with fellow geneticist Alfred Day Hershey in the first half of the 20th century, making breakthroughs in the fundamental nature of the scientific community's understanding of DNA. In 1952, Chase and Hershey designed and executed the game-changing 'blender experiment' which proved that DNA was the substance that transmits genetic material—not proteins as believed at the time.
Chase and Hershey's discovery was pivotal to our current understanding of DNA and our ability to accurately conduct DNA testing. Their discovery led to Norton Zinder and Francis Crick's experiment confirming the shape of DNA as a double helix in 1953, for example. Hershey eventually won the Nobel Prize in 1969 for his discoveries concerning the genetic composition of viruses, but Chase had moved on to other endeavors and was not honored for her contributions to the 1952 experiment.
