Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Cincinnati, OH
In December 2021, 14 individuals from the greater Cincinnati area were arrested in connection with what local law enforcement called one of the area's largest heroin and fentanyl drug trafficking organizations. The drug trafficking ring was organized and run by Cincinnati resident Steffen Roberson alongside 13 others, all of whom were charged with conspiring to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl across Ohio and Indiana.
According to reports, this large-scale drug operation took place over four years. The group would acquire large amounts of drugs from multiple sources, including Atlanta and Baltimore. They were also known to manufacture heroin and fentanyl mixtures. Over the course of the investigation, law enforcement seized $150,000 in cash, 10 kilograms of fentanyl, multiple vehicles, and 28 firearms.
Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Cincinnati, OH
In 2019, the Safety, Outreach, Autonomy, and Respect (SOAR) Initiative was founded by a small group of students at Ohio State University in an effort to change the public health landscape for those suffering from substance abuse issues. The initiative works to prevent deadly drug overdose through a variety of harm reduction tactics.
One harm reduction tactic is the SOAR App. This mobile-based application provides local residents with overdose surges and deadly drug batch alerts when such concerns arise in a specific area. Likewise, the group offers the free shipping of drug test strips to ensure those suffering from substance abuse avoid fentanyl-laced controlled substances, which can induce deadly drug overdose.
Additionally, people from Cincinnati can also rely on Project DAWN, which is a network of fentanyl test strips and naloxone distribution. The program helps with harm reduction services across Ohio and supports overdose education.
