Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.
Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Chula Vista DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Chula Vista, California
In Chula Vista, paternity can be established in three ways. The paternity is automatically established when the child is born within the marriage. When the couple is not married, they can file a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage, or the court can determine paternity.
Sometimes parents do not agree about paternity, in which case a DNA test may be performed to determine whether the alleged father is the biological father. After the DNA test is completed, ideally through the Department of Child Support Services, there will be a notice for a hearing to establish paternity and child support.
DNA test reunites family after 52 years
Two women took a DNA test. One woman, Erin Chatterton, lives in Ohio, and the other, Lisa Raessner, is from San Diego. Erin took the test just for fun, but Lisa was trying to put together their heritage. Once they took the test, it all went pretty quickly. They got a match and soon realized they were sisters.
Dick Leslie was divorced and remarried Karen Leslie. When Lisa and her other sister Lora found out, they asked him about it but were not getting any answers. They decided to talk to their stepmother, who confessed that she had a daughter. Karen was raised in a religious family, so she was kicked out of her home when she became pregnant outside of marriage. After that, she gave up her daughter for adoption.
After weeks of talking, the sisters decided to organize a reunion. The family met at the San Diego airport, which was very emotional. Erin's adoptive parents were apprehensive about this reunion, but she reassured them she could not have been happier to have them as parents. This was just a cherry on the top.
