Chino, California: Drug abuse trends
Chino falls under San Bernardino County, where fentanyl has been a growing issue. This opioid, which is fifty to a hundred times stronger than morphine, can be fatal in doses as low as two milligrams. In 2019, fentanyl killed at least 74 people in San Bernardino County; in 2020, fentanyl deaths rose to another 227; in 2021, at least 309 people did not survive an overdose caused by fentanyl.
According to the County of San Bernardino Department of Behavioral Health, methamphetamine is one of the most commonly abused drugs that lead people to seek treatment for Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Following methamphetamine use are opiates, alcohol, cannabis, other drugs, and then cocaine. Although San Bernardino saw decreasing numbers for SUD-related treatment admissions from 2018 to 2021, the county experienced a surge of admissions again in 2022.
Chino police arrested five people operating a suspected drug house
In March 2021, a Chino woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle large quantities of fentanyl and heroin for distribution throughout the United States. The woman was arrested from her home, and charged with "one count of conspiracy to distribute heroin and fentanyl, and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl."
In December 2021, Chino police obtained a search warrant to enter a residence that was suspected of illegal drug activity. The investigation led to the arrest of five people for operating a drug house and possessing stolen firearms and illegal narcotics. Two were released at the scene, one was released on bail, and one remained in custody.
