Chico falls under Butte County, which has reported an increase in fentanyl deaths in recent years. Like much of the country, Butte County has been affected by the opioid epidemic. In 2019, three people died from fentanyl; in 2020, the number of deaths increased to nine; in 2021, another 41 people died from fentanyl. Methamphetamine deaths have also followed a similar pattern. In 2019, 37 people in Butte County died from meth. In 2020, 54 more people died from meth, and in 2021, another 79 people died from meth.
Butte County alone reported 62 opioid-related deaths in 2021. Authorities try to fight the increasing number of overdose deaths by preventing dangerous substances from making their way into the hands of consumers. In 2021, the Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force reported seizing 46.43 pounds of methamphetamine, 4.31 pounds of heroin, 1.23 pounds of fentanyl, and 0.59 pounds of cocaine.
