Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Chester, MD and Queen Anne's County
The Go Purple campaign in Queen Anne's County was established to raise awareness of drugs among adolescents. The campaign runs every September. Its mission statement is, "Launched on the heels of a spate of overdoses across the county, QAC Goes Purple promotes awareness of the opioid epidemic. The project focuses on preventing the use of opioids through education and community support." The group places several banners throughout the county and encourages Chester and Queen Anne's County residents to put out purple lights.
In addition, Queen Anne's County and the state of Maryland have a Good Samaritan Law to protect people from arrest and prosecution for certain crimes to encourage people to seek help for overdoses. Anyone that provides assistance or seeks help for an overdose has protection from being arrested for providing alcohol to minors and possession charges.
Experts Say...
County Commissioner James Moran spoke about gateway drugs that lead to addiction. He said that the problem with opioids is that addiction doesn't start with illegal drugs, it starts with pain management. "A five-day supply [of prescription opioid pain medication] results in about a 5% chance of continued use for one year. A 25 day supply increases that chance of continued use to 35% and a 40 day supply a 45% chance. And once your physician stops prescribing and you are now addicted, heroin is the cheap, street opioid that feeds that addiction," he stated.
