Chesapeake, VA: Drug abuse trends

The Chesapeake community has noticed an increase in fentanyl overdoses as it has become one of the most popular drugs in the United States. Fentanyl is fifty times stronger than heroin and is also highly addictive. More than 150 people die daily due to overdoses related to opioids like fentanyl, which is why Chesapeake school administrators decided to fight this trend and take proactive steps to keep their families and communities safe.

In November 2023, the Chesapeake Police Department and the school division held a forum called "Not My Kid" in an effort to keep fentanyl out of schools. Local officers admitted that fentanyl is responsible for the growth in fatal overdoses in the area.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Chesapeake, VA

Locals are working on reducing drug abuse in Chesapeake, VA. The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) consists of five steps—Assessment, Capacity, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation—to help prevention professionals understand the environmental and behavioral health issues related to substance abuse.

The Community Coalitions of Virginia (CCoVA) primarily focuses on preventing and reducing substance abuse and improving the quality of life. They also try to educate coalition members about marijuana and possible issues related to legalization.

Virginia ABC Education and Prevention aims to eliminate underage and high-risk drinking by implementing programs that allow the community to educate people better. These programs are geared towards kids and young adults. The Virginia Department of Education also addresses substance abuse prevention and intervention in local schools, although no state funding is currently allocated for these efforts.
