From 2016 to 2019, the number of opioid overdose deaths was steadily declining in Erie County. However, like many locations in New York and throughout the country, Erie County experienced a sharp increase in opioid overdose deaths in 2020. The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) reported 232 deaths related to opioids in 2020. Toxicology reports show that cocaine and opioid involvement in overdose deaths rose by 43 percent in 2020. Fentanyl was involved in 84 percent of all opioid overdose fatalities, and only nine percent involved heroin. The ECDOH reported a 50 percent increase in individuals aged 40 to 49 who died from opioids between 2018 and 2020.

Easier access to Narcan, a life-saving drug that can reverse deadly opioid overdose effects, may reduce the number of opioid overdose deaths in Cheektowaga and Erie County. Western New York has made significant steps to increase the availability of Narcan. In 2020, the Opiate Epidemic Task Force contributed to 464 Narcan boxes in the area and 624 Narcan kits. People from Cheektowaga and western New York can now "Text for Narcan," which sends Narcan by mail to those who request it.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man from Cheektowaga, New York, and charged him with maintaining drug premises, drug trafficking, and possessing firearms. The police executed a search warrant and found a shotgun, electrical tasers, and stun gun. Charges for the man could carry up to life in prison and a minimum of at least five years.
