The streets of Chattanooga are safer now, thanks to the recent arrest of 14 people for their connections with nine drug overdose deaths dating back to 2020. Chattanooga Police Department announced the indictments for crimes including 2nd-degree murder, criminally negligent homicide, delivery of fentanyl, delivery of methamphetamine, and more.
Zac McCullough, Assistant Chief of Investigations, stated that these indictments "represent just a small fraction of a horrible epidemic sweeping our country, and impacting our community." According to CPD data, there were 266 fatal overdoses in the city between 2020 and May of 2022. During that same time period, there were 15 death investigations leading to 22 arrests and an additional 14 indictments.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Chattanooga
Residents of Chattanooga who suffer from substance abuse problems may have the opportunity to turn their lives around, thanks to the Hamilton County Drug Recovery Court program. The purpose of this program is to reduce recidivism by breaking the cycle of addiction and assisting offenders with services that improve their likelihood of living a successful life. The program is funded by the State of Tennessee and the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
To successfully complete the program, participants must follow a specific set of rules and guidelines, attend scheduled court sessions and hearings, meet with case managers and counselors, submit to random drug and alcohol screenings, obtain employment and/or attend school full time, pay all necessary fines and fees, and engage in substance abuse and/or mental health treatment if recommended.
