Hasib Muqsit-Rivers faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and a maximum of life in prison, as well as a fine of $1 million and a court-ordered minimum term of supervision for three years following release from prison.

In 2019, Charleston County had the second-highest number of residents diagnosed with substance abuse overdoses and disorders. In the state of South Carolina, the number of overdoses increased by more than 45% between 2019 and 2020—the fourth largest increase in the United States. During that same time period, the overdose rate in Charleston County doubled. The county is consistently in the top ten for overdoses in the state.

The Charleston County Addiction Crisis Task Force is a police-assisted peer recovery outreach initiative created to address the area's opioid crisis. In 2022, the program was awarded $900,000 by the U.S. Department of Justice. Additional planned expansions include increasing officer training, better oversight of Peer Support Specialists, and the design of multimedia projects to increase awareness of the outreach program.
