Over the last few years, deaths from overall drug overdoses and opioid overdoses in Maricopa County have increased. In 2021, drug abuse trends for people aged 25 and older continued to grow. Most of the deaths involved more than one drug, and over two-thirds of all drug overdose fatalities in Maricopa County involved opioids.
Fentanyl has become a major contributor to the overdose crisis, often mixed with other drugs to deadly effect. Males in Maricopa County are at a higher risk, with drug overdose death rates being 2.5 times higher for men than for women. Although opioids dominate the statistics, methamphetamine deaths are also on the rise.
Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Chandler, AZ
Multiple organizations in Arizona are working on curbing substance abuse issues. The Arizona Department of Health Services focuses on reducing opioid deaths from illegal or prescription opioids, which cost the lives of more than five people per day in the state. Fentanyl has become increasingly popular to lace into other drugs, and street use of fentanyl has often proven to be deadly.
Two groups in Arizona have banded together to create a centralized location for national and state resources targeting substance abuse prevention education and training. The Arizona Substance Abuse Partnership's Community Outreach and Training Workgroup has joined forces with the Arizona National Guard Counterdrug Task Force Civil Operations team to create a comprehensive website for prevention resources.
