District Attorney increased funding to prosecute cases involving DUID in Riverside County
In October 2023, Riverside County received a grant of $679,708, which is focused on arresting and prosecuting people driving under the influence of drugs (DUID). They received $20,000 more than last year, and the investment has shown higher conviction rates for DUID cases.
Although alcohol remains the leading factor in DUI incidents, the District Attorney's Office is actively working to spread awareness that DUI offenses also include driving under the influence of marijuana and prescription drugs.
Methamphetamine sting went wrong, leaving the trafficker with 60 pounds of meth
In April 2023, a sting operation by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, intended to catch drug traffickers, went wrong. As a result, the drug trafficker escaped with 60 pounds of methamphetamine.
Deputies went undercover as drug sellers, selling meth to a suspect for $35,000. However, when they tried to stop the suspect's car, he fled at high speeds with the methamphetamine in his possession. The incident was only acknowledged by the department after media inquiries, and is now under ongoing investigation.
Former Riverside Sheriff's Department Captain Michael Lujan stated, "It is pretty embarrassing. It's unfortunate because now we have additional narcotics out on the street."
