Back in late 2020, a Cartersville man was sentenced to four life sentences plus 10 years for his role in a drug distribution operation that resulted in the death of a West Virginia woman. Following a nine-day trial, a federal jury found the Cartersville man guilty on a multitude of charges, including conspiracy to possess and distribute controlled substances and distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.
According to reports, the defendant trafficked and distributed more than 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine in addition to cocaine hydrochloride and fentanyl over the course of roughly five months using hotel and motel rooms across the area. It was discovered the suspect also distributed fentanyl to a West Virginia woman at one of these motels during this time, which resulted in her overdose death.
Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Cartersville, GA
In the fall of 2011, the Bartow County Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) developed the Coalition to Prevent the Misuse of Alcohol as part of the state-wide Alcohol Prevention Initiative. Over the course of the following years, the Coalition worked to reduce early-onset alcohol use among local youth and strived to reduce alcohol access.
In early 2018, the Coalition went on to rebrand as Bartow Against Drugs (BAD) in an effort to enhance these preventive efforts into the rising concerns of substance abuse. BAD now collaborates with multiple community members to develop campaigns and resources to help raise awareness of adolescent substance abuse and the dangers associated with it.
