Fentanyl has risen in California, Sacramento County, and Carmichael. In 2021, 116 people died in Sacramento County because of overdosing on this substance; in the first seven months of 2022, there were already 50 more deaths reported. This increase can be attributed to drug dealers mixing fentanyl with other substances, such as cocaine, methamphetamine, Xanax, Percocet, Adderall, OxyContin, heroin, marijuana, and vape pens.
Sacramento County is trying to lower opioid overdose deaths by making Naloxone more available. Naloxone is a life-saving drug that can reverse the effects of fatal opioid overdoses. Naloxone can be obtained from local pharmacies, the DHCS Naloxone Distribution Project, or the County Health Department. Additionally, Sacramento County, in collaboration with various partners, has established the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition. Two Sacramento County men indicted for cocaine trafficking
In March 2022, two men were indicted for cocaine trafficking, one of which was from Carmichael. The men were charged with distribution of cocaine and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Based on the court documents, one man distributed cocaine in kilograms between April 2016 and March 2022. He had his source of supply in Mexico. The other man worked for him as his larger sub-dealer and later as his stash pad manager. If convicted, the maximum statutory penalty would be 40 years in prison and a five million dollar fine.
