In 2018, an investigation led to arrests in Carmel and Indy after police seized over 300 pounds of marijuana and $25,000. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) teamed up with Illinois State Police after Illinois State Police intercepted large amounts of marijuana making its way to Indianapolis. Undercover officers delivered 14 duffle bags of marijuana to a business on Craig Street. Officers executed a search warrant on the business, seizing a 2015 Audi and over $14,000. A 45-year-old man was arrested. Officers were then able to obtain search warrants for the man's home and two Carmel apartments. They seized an additional $12,500, marijuana THC wax, and multiple documents. Altogether, authorities recovered more than $25,000 cash, one gun, 304 pounds of high-grade marijuana, and two vehicles.

"We started seeing fentanyl emerge around 2014. It was replaced by meth for a period, but then it came roaring back," said Former Hamilton County Coroner John Chalfin. "The victims are all over the place age-wise. I had a 61-year-old, people in their 50s, very young people." Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt said, "We'd like to improve follow-ups, and outreach, to help patients stay on course, stay clean."

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Carmel, IN

Carmel, IN has its own Opioid Quick Response team. In 2019, Hamilton County began expanding the Opioid Quick Response Team program to other cities. The teams work to provide emergency opioid treatment and follow-up care to opioid overdose survivors. Each team includes a firefighter, police officer, and counselor. After someone's life is saved by Narcan, a medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, the team provides follow-up care within three days.
