This initiative was established to improve public safety and reduce the financial impact of local drug crimes. It offers individuals who have a significant criminal history related to drug and alcohol use the ability to access a team of experts including treatment, case management, prosecution, defense, and law enforcement professionals. These individuals work together to assess, identify, and refer participants to appropriate community resources.
The overall goal is to break the addiction cycle that results in criminal behavior. On average, 50% of graduates from the program avoid receiving new criminal convictions for three years after their graduation.
Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in California, MD
The St. Mary's County Health Department, which serves residents in California and other nearby cities, provides residents with a free Harm Reduction Program. This program is designed to increase public safety, decrease the spread of infectious diseases related to IV drug use, and connect residents with treatment and recovery support.
