Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.
Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Caguas DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Woman Born in Caguas Reunites with Mother After 37 Years
Sandra Osorio was living in Caguas, Puerto Rico when she gave birth to her daughter, Jessica Douglas. She was a single mother with four children and very poor. When circumstances forced her to leave Puerto Rico without her two youngest children, she trusted her friend to watch Jessica for three months.
During that time, Jessica's father also ran into trouble and had to leave the island immediately. When he returned for the child, he found that the friend had taken off with her. After searching for her daughter for many years, Osorio finally gave up. However, Douglas located her and asked her to take a DNA test. As expected, the test revealed there was a 99% chance that Osorio was her mother. They eventually met for an emotional reunion that was 37 years in the making.
Paternity Laws in Caguas, Puerto Rico
In Caguas and elsewhere in Puerto Rico, a child born to unmarried parents is considered not to have a father until legal paternity is established. There are several methods to do this, including adding the father's name to the child's birth certificate, signing and filing a voluntary statement of paternity form, or court order declaring the man to be the child's legal father. Paternity can also be established if the child's biological parents are married after the child is born.
Paternity and Child Support
Before a mother can request child support in Caguas, Puerto Rico, paternity must be established. Only once a child's legal father is recognized can the courts hold him responsible for financially supporting the child. In Puerto Rico, child support usually begins on the date the court order was filed and is not retroactive, making it important to file as soon as possible. If the mother does not know where the father is, the courts may need to track him down and order a DNA paternity test before issuing an order.
