In 2020, following the COVID-19 pandemic, Erie County had a 30 percent increase in deaths associated with fentanyl and cocaine. Experts think this change was caused by the increased anxiety people experienced due to disconnection from social supports and safety net providers. Since telemedicine was a substantial positive shift, officials encouraged people to maintain physical distance from others but remain socially connected to family, friends, and treatment providers.
Between 2020 and 2022, the number of people dying due to drug overdoses in Erie County has been increasing, but in 2023, the county saw a little drop. In 2022, 307 people did not survive overdose, whereas in 2023, the number decreased to 245 individuals.
Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Buffalo, NY
Multiple initiatives are fighting the current situation regarding drug abuse in Buffalo, NY. One of them is Positive Pressure, whose primary goal is to increase Community Collaboration and reduce substance use, including alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drug use.
Another organization is ASAP—Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers of New York State—whose primary mission is to support individuals, groups, and other organizations that are dedicated to preventing alcohol and substance use disorders.
Finally, awarded funding in 2021 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, BestSelf Substance Use Disorders Reentry Initiative's primary purpose is to improve the corrections system's ability to curb substance abuse through proper treatment and recovery services. They try to rehabilitate inmates so that individuals and communities are safer and healthier when they exit incarceration.
