Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Brookline, MA
In an effort to curb the ongoing risk of prescription drug abuse and addiction, the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office developed the Drug Take Back Initiative. This county-wide initiative works to provide local residents with safe ways to properly dispose of their unwanted prescription medicine to keep it out of the wrong hands and reduce abuse concerns.
In partnership with 25 police stations across the Norfolk County region, the initiative has implemented drug take-back boxes at each of these locations 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no questions asked. In addition to preventing local substance abuse concerns, the Drug Take Back Initiative also works to prevent groundwater contamination frequently caused by improper flushing or drain disposal of prescription medication.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Brookline, MA
According to Massachusetts General Laws Ch. 94C, Sec. 24A, each time a medical practitioner issues a prescription for any Schedule II or III narcotic drug or a benzodiazepine, they are required to utilize the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool (MassPAT). MassPAT works to help medical practitioners across the state better monitor patient prescribing to combat the deadly effects of the opioid epidemic.
Through MassPAT, medical professionals can view a patient's prescription history to make more calculated prescribing decisions and enable early detection of potential opioid misuse. By identifying concerns up front, a doctor is more inclined to prompt early intervention and offer the patient resources and guidance on how to seek drug abuse treatment services and overdose prevention resources like Naloxone.
