Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Bridgeport, CT

In an effort to curb opioid abuse and the spiking rate of deadly overdose experienced across the Bridgeport area, local officials developed the Bridgeport IamU initiative. The Bridgeport Health Department collaborated with Mayor Joe Ganim in 2018 to launch the initiative, which seeks to provide information on support services and resources to those struggling with opioid addiction.

The program partners with Fairfield, Stratford, Trumbull, and New Haven area officials to provide more expansive access to treatment as well as stronger partnerships with law enforcement and medical organizations. An important effort pushed through the Bridgeport IamU campaign is increased access to Narcan, an emergency overdose reversal drug that can be used to prevent overdose deaths across the area.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Bridgeport, CT

In 2019, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed Public Act No. 19-191 into law in an effort to expand on existing opioid regulations in the state of Connecticut. Also known as "An Act Addressing Opioid Use," the 2019 updates require hospitals to perform mental health screenings on patients who are being treated for an opioid overdose to help better target treatment efforts.

Public Act No. 19-191 also created new prescribing regulations for health professionals practicing in the state of Connecticut. Under the new law, all prescribers who provide more than a 12-week supply of opioid prescription must now also establish a treatment agreement with patients. This agreement helps patients identify the addiction risks associated with opioid use and the steps they can take if they become dependent on them.
