In an attempt to address the growing drug problems in the Brandon area, the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County has announced a new initiative to begin distributing free Narcan (Naloxone) spray kits. These kits can be picked up by individuals over the age of 18 who are at risk of experiencing narcotics overdoses or are caregivers who may witness an overdose. The kits are available at a variety of locations throughout Hillsborough County.

The number of overdose deaths involving the dangerous drug fentanyl has surged in Florida in recent years, and the state's Attorney General Ashley Moody says the problem is expected to keep growing. Fatal overdoses across the state have nearly doubled since 2018. Many have been attributed to fentanyl being added to drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and marijuana without the user's knowledge.

In Brandon, the area's opioid problem made headlines when a 15-month-old toddler died from fentanyl poisoning. The child was found unresponsive in bed and could not be revived. Both parents were arrested on drug charges, although no charges were filed relating to the child's death. According to an affidavit, both parents denied using drugs and said they had never used fentanyl.
