Boise, Idaho: Drug abuse trends
Idaho and Boise struggle with the opioid epidemic just like the rest of the country and have seen a growth in drug overdose fatalities. Between 2017 and 2022, almost 1,800 Idaho residents died due to drug overdose, and the data available for 2022 predicted an additional 381 Idahoans to die due to overdose in the same year. Idahoans aged between 25-34 and 35-44 had the highest overdose fatalities rate by age group, but these groups are followed very closely by older residents as well.
However, even the younger generation is affected by drug use and misuse. The Idaho Youth Risk Behavior Survey, conducted in 2021, revealed that almost 19% of high school seniors and approximately 14% of all Idaho high school students have misused prescription medications at least once in their lives. According to the 2021 Idaho Healthy Youth Survey, while most Idaho middle and high school students (grades 8-12) did not misuse prescription drugs, among those who did, 72% misused pain relievers, 33% misused depressants, and 33% misused stimulants.
Additionally, of the students who misused prescription medications, 45% used their own prescriptions, while 61% acquired the medications through purchase, theft, or from a family member or friend. Most of these students (73%) reported misusing the medication in their homes.
