Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Boiling Springs, SC
In May 2019, the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department announced a major drug bust in Boiling Springs valued at almost a million dollars. The investigation began after Jonathan Willingham, who had a 15-year criminal history of drugs, weapons, and fleeing law enforcement, was investigated for an outstanding warrant. County officials conducted surveillance on Willingham's home in anticipation of his arrival.
When Willingham and his accomplices, Robin Frady and Jennifer Cole, arrived at his residence, Willingham entered the home carrying a large duffel bag. Deputies approached as Willingham came back outside to meet with Frady, where Willingham then fled. He was apprehended by a K-9 and later arrested; deputies also discovered 8 and 10-year-old children home alone at this time.
Once given warrant permission to search the home and vehicle, law enforcement discovered 360 grams of methamphetamine inside the vehicle along with eight kilograms of methamphetamine and one kilogram of heroin inside the Boiling Spring's home. Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department arrested all three individuals and estimated the drug bust at roughly $983,000.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed H.3728 in May 2019 to create new laws and regulations that increase combat efforts against the deadly opioid epidemic occurring across the state. Effective January 2021, healthcare practitioners must now review a patient's controlled substance prescription and opioid antidote administration history prior to issuing any Schedule II controlled substance prescription.
In addition to this effort toward reducing unnecessary and unsafe prescribing practices, healthcare professionals must now also only prescribe controlled substances via the electronic prescribing system. This system allows state officials to better monitor the flow of drugs across the state and more effectively identify potential patient concerns.
