Substance Abuse Statistics for Bloomington, MN
News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Bloomington, MN
In September 2022, the Bloomington Police Department conducted a drug bust which they believe may have been the largest fentanyl pill bust in the Midwest. Fentanyl is an extremely potent synthetic opioid responsible for the majority of overdose deaths documented across not only the state of Minnesota but the entire nation.
After police were called to the location to investigate a report of financial fraud, Bloomington Police instead discovered a massive amount of fentanyl pills pressed as M-30 pills to appear as counterfeit oxycodone. Once combined, law enforcement collected 108,000 doses that totaled 24 pounds in weight which, according to the Bloomington Police Chief, is enough to kill a fifth of the entire state's population. The 36-year-old suspect was arrested and federally charged with fentanyl possession.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Bloomington, MN
Under state law, medical professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, and dentists are required to follow regulations set forth by the Minnesota Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). This program was established for database monitoring to better protect public health from opioid abuse concerns and more effectively identify concerns of prescription misuse and poor prescribing practices in the state.
Under this program, any health professional who is part of an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) must review the PMP database every 90 days when treating a patient with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Likewise, pharmacies and prescribers who dispense any sort of Schedule II-V substance are required to submit prescription data into the PMP monitoring system to support ongoing statewide opioid distribution surveillance.
