Betlehem, Pennsylvania: Drug abuse trends
Bethlehem is located in Northampton County, which recorded 86 drug overdose deaths in 2021. Out of these, 61 cases involved fentanyl, accounting for more than seventy percent of all drug overdose deaths in the county. To enhance their potency and increase the sales profit, fentanyl is often laced into other drugs like heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana. Since people who use these drugs may not be aware that they have been laced with fentanyl, the risk of unintentional overdose is much higher.
Between 2018 and 2022, there were 77,714 doses of naloxone administered in Pennsylvania to help those who suffered from an overdose. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, and acts as a life-saving drug that can help reverse the fatal effects of opioid overdoses.
