According to law enforcement, officials received notice of alleged drug activity occurring at a local tire business called the "Used Tire Shop." Narcotics raided the tire business, where a pound of meth, several ounces of ecstasy powder, hundreds of ecstasy pills, and a felony amount of marijuana was discovered.

Law enforcement arrested tire shop employees Jason Atkinson and Tellie Meridith for their roles in the operation at the time of the raid, and charged them with various counts of firearms, drug trafficking, and drug possession. Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Belden, MS

As with many states across the country, the state of Mississippi has witnessed increasing numbers of heroin and prescription opioid abuse — and fatal overdoses — in recent years. In response to this deadly trend, Mississippi lawmakers passed both HB 996 and HB 1032 to enhance the fight against the opioid epidemic across the state.

To address the increasing numbers of opioid overdose deaths, HB 996 created the ability for physicians to issue a standing order to pharmacies to provide Naloxone to individuals and families of individuals at risk of opioid overdose. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that can help combat deadly drug overdose at the time of opioid consumption.

Furthermore, HB 1032 now requires all medical practitioners to register with the Mississippi Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). This program provides more in-depth details regarding a patient's prescription history, which allows for more safe and effective controlled substance prescribing practices as well as a reduction in prescription fraud.
