Experts Say...
The service director with Land Manor Inc. in Beaumont, Carl White spoke about the increase in the local opioid problem due to trauma, job loss, and isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic. "A lot of people have a lot of trauma, so they try to medicate their trauma, and that's what makes a drug like fentanyl so popular. It's good at medicating that trauma. So, there's no feeling," White explained. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Captain Crystal Holmes said that drugs can now be produced at home with pill presses, and they can make them look like prescription pills. Homes said that the best way to stop the distribution is with the community's help. She said, "We really are dependent on the intel we receive on the streets, but also are depending on our neighbors to monitor what's going on in their neighborhood because no one knows better what goes on on your street than you."

In addition to Narcan, the program offers fentanyl test strips and education on how to recognize the signs of an overdose. The program targets outreach to the most at-risk populations with in-person education and resource distribution and aims to remove the stigma around mental health, overdoses, and addiction.
