Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Baltimore DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Baltimore, Maryland - DNA Testing
Establishing paternity in Baltimore, Maryland
If a mother and father have a child but are not married, they have a couple of options to establish paternity. It is possible to establish paternity right after the baby is born in the hospital by signing the Affidavit of Parentage. This can also be done outside the hospital, but it must be signed in the notary public's presence and sent back to the Division of Vital Records.
Another way of establishing paternity is through the court, which will order a DNA test. If the DNA testing confirms the paternity, the court can start deciding about the child's custody, visitation, or financial support.
DNA test reunites father and daughter after 50 years
Brenda had been looking for her father for years, but all she had was his first name and the fact she knew he lived somewhere in the area. She tried everything to find him, but it was all dead ends until she decided to do a DNA test.
Arthur, Brenda's father, was also looking for her. When his other three kids were young, he sat down with them to tell them they had an older sister. However, he had no idea how to find her. When his kids started getting involved in social media later on, he asked them to help him find her. For years, they had no luck.
Finally, Brenda took a DNA test in a last effort to locate her father. Thanks to the DNA test, she found some of her cousins, who eventually connected her to her father. It took them 50 years to find each other, but now they could not be happier they managed it!
Brenda says everything has been fantastic since they met, and she found her father and other family members to be very welcoming. She decided to invite them to her wedding. Brenda also introduced her son to her dad, and he expressed that it was all very emotional.
She was planning to move to Japan because of her husband's work, but they promised each other that no distance could ever separate them again.
