Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Athens, GA
With heightened concerns about substance abuse and overdose deaths affecting the Athens and surrounding Clarke County areas, local officials established the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Athens (SAPCA). This coalition works with local, regional, and statewide partners to address various program initiatives that target the concern of substance abuse.
SAPCA addresses substance abuse by establishing and strengthening partnerships amongst Athens nonprofit agencies, government entities, and various community groups. Fueled by these collaborations, SAPCA can more effectively reduce substance use among local youth by implementing school and juvenile court programs that help educate local adolescents on the risks of substance abuse.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Athens, GA
In August 2022, Athens-Clarke County commissioners approved an ordinance decriminalizing marijuana possession to a certain level. Under current Georgia state law, both the medical and recreational use, sale, and possession of marijuana are considered illegal. However, this new Athens-Clarke County ordinance established some of the lowest fines in the state for possession.
Under the new ordinance, those found in possession of an ounce or less of marijuana will no longer face jail time and instead have to pay a fee of $35. Compared to the state misdemeanor possession charge of up to a $1,000 fine and/or up to 12 months in prison, this new Athens-Clarke County ordinance works to reduce unnecessary jail time while still implementing repercussions for those in violation of state marijuana possession law.
