Astoria, NY: Drug abuse trends

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected Astoria, Queens. In 2019, there were 268 overdose deaths. This number increased by 45.5 percent in 2020 when 391 people died due to drug overdose. Experts blame the pandemic, which fueled the drug epidemic throughout the country and struck Queens hard. Some believe the negative mental health impacts that the pandemic had on people led to an increase in people resorting to drugs as a coping mechanism. Socialization was limited, treatment services were harder to access, job loss was rampant, and anxiety and depression grew.

Seventy-one percent of all drug overdoses happening in Queens are caused by fentanyl or its derivatives. These numbers are alarming, and the number of people dying due to overdoses is five times higher than homicides.

Overdose Prevention Centers are facilities where people who struggle with drug addiction can use drugs safely under staff supervision, receive medical care, and be connected to treatment and social services.

OPCs have proven to be effective. According to data, there has never been an overdose death in a facility like this. It can also help save up to 130 lives a year. These centers help the community and the people who use drugs stay safer.
