Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Arlington, VA

Arlington County officials created the Arlington Addiction Recovery Initiative in 2017 to help construct the area's opioid and other addictions task force. This task force consists of county stakeholders, including first responders, justice system officials, and treatment providers, and it provides residents with the resources they need to prevent, treat, and recover from addiction.

The task's primary goal is to prevent local Arlington residents from developing substance abuse disorders. From here, the group can more effectively increase access and awareness of local treatment resources located throughout the community. With these various resources and guidance, the Arlington Addiction Recovery Initiative hopes to reduce the spiking rate of deadly drug overdose seen across Arlington and the surrounding Virginia state area.

Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Arlington, VA

In April 2022, an Arlington man was sentenced to ten years in prison for his role in a counterfeit fentanyl pill trafficking operation. According to reports, the man was sentenced after being convicted of distributing more than seven kilograms of fentanyl, a highly dangerous synthetic opioid responsible for the majority of drug overdose deaths seen in recent years.

He was initially arrested in June 2020 after law enforcement issued a search warrant for a stolen vehicle. Inside his residence, law enforcement found more than a thousand grams of fentanyl in a blender used to manufacture thousands of counterfeit pills resembling various medications, such as Oxycodone. Law enforcement also retrieved $23,000 in cash alongside multiple pieces of jewelry tied to his involvement in narcotic sales and manufacturing.
