Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Ardmore, OK
Following a two-year multi-agency investigation across Texas and Oklahoma, 13 individuals from local areas including Ardmore and Durant were arrested in a large drug bust. The investigation first began when law enforcement caught wind of information regarding one of the suspects and his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation in Johnson and Marshall County.
The information was shared with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, who then conducted a massive drug bust at a home in Wapanucka. Inside of the home, law enforcement discovered nearly 10 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of $50,000 dollars, as well as approximately 70 firearms. In addition to those arrested in connection with the operation, law enforcement anticipates more arrests as the investigation continues.
Laws and Regulations Pertaining to Substance Abuse in Ardmore, OK
Under previous Oklahoma law, if an Ardmore resident was found transporting or in the possession of a Schedule I or II drug with the intent to distribute, the offender would receive a minimum five years to life prison sentence. However, with Senate Bill 793 signed in 2018, drug laws were amended to reduce unnecessarily harsh sentences for offenders.
Furthermore, the recent changes to drug laws work to reduce Oklahoma prison population numbers in nonviolent criminals. Under SB 793, residents of Oklahoma can now no longer receive a life sentence for Schedule I and II possession and distribution charges and can only face a maximum of seven years in prison.
