The numbers have grown significantly, and experts claim that cocaine in Erie County is sometimes laced with fentanyl. Fentanyl is a potent drug that can be fatal in tiny doses. In 2020, 84 percent of opioid-related overdoses involved fentanyl.

Many experts believe that the key to preventing drug overdoses in the area is making Narcan available and training people who know how and when to use it. Narcan is a drug that can reverse overdose effects. In 2020 alone, 464 emergency Narcan boxes and 624 Narcan kits were distributed to the public. There were also 700 Narcan kits sent by mail. Experts hope this will help decrease the number of individuals dying from a drug overdose.

Drug bust in Amherst: Police seized over four kilograms of drugs

Police searched a house in Amherst after getting a search warrant and seized half a kilogram of methamphetamine, one kilogram of fentanyl, and three kilograms of cocaine. They also found ecstasy, many packing materials, and mixing substances.

Detectives took two people into custody, but one woman was released after posting a $200,000 bail. The man was remanded to the holding center without bail and held on U.S. Marshal detainer. Both people were investigated for allegedly trafficking narcotics in Erie County.
