Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Iowa
Like many other states across the U.S., Iowa has its fair share of issues with substance abuse. Methamphetamine is a significant problem in Ames and the surrounding area. The drug is typically sold by the gram, and there are 454 grams in one pound. In 2021, the Story County Sheriff's office seized a shocking 79 pounds of meth from the streets. Across the state, officers seized a total of nearly 331 pounds of meth in 2021 alone.
In 2019, there were 350 drug overdose deaths in Iowa. This increased to 419 in 2020 and 470 in 2021. There has also been a 64% increase in overdose deaths caused by opioids, fentanyl in particular. More recently, the Iowa State University Police Department (ISUPD) reported a 700% increase in drug violations between January 2022 and January 2023.
Policy Proposals Regarding Drug Distribution in Iowa
In response to the state's skyrocketing instances of fentanyl overdose deaths, House File 595 aims to deter the sale of fentanyl-laced drugs by increasing penalties for those caught manufacturing, distributing, or possessing drugs that contain fentanyl. If passed, the bill will allow a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison for large quantities of the drug. The penalties would also be doubled for cases involving an injury due to the drug and tripled for those involving a death.
Rep. Ross Wilburn, a Democrat from Ames, says he supports the bill but wants people to keep in mind that increasing penalties may not necessarily be the best way to deter the crime. He also cited other potential issues with the bill as it is currently written. The bill passed the House with a 91-3 vote and will now be heard by the Senate.
