Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Americus, GA
On March 9, 2020 the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested three men for their role in a drug trafficking operation located in and around Americus, Georgia. As part of a 10-month investigation, undercover agents from the Americus Police Department and Sumter County Sheriff's Office conducted undercover drug purchases from the operation. Surveillance also helped agents identify the two residences the drug trafficking ring was operating out of.
With enough evidence, local law enforcement then executed a search warrant, where over 40 ounces of powder cocaine, over two pounds of high-grade marijuana, and $87,790 in cash was discovered. It was also discovered that cocaine was being cooked into crack cocaine at one of the residences. Willie Mathis, Milo Mumford, and Deandre Wilburn were arrested for trafficking cocaine and the possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.
Laws and Regulations Surround Substance Abuse in Americus, GA
With the growing concern of substance abuse experienced across the state of Georgia, government officials passed House Bill 965 "Georgia 911 Medical Amnesty Law" in 2014. The law, which went into effect immediately, provides that anyone seeking medical assistance for themselves or a loved one cannot be charged with a drug violation if evidence of drug possession is found.
This immunity from arrest, charge, and prosecution hopes to push Americus, GA residents to seek emergency help in the event of an overdose rather than avoiding help over the concern of criminal prosecution. Likewise, the law also established a standing order to provide the public with access to the emergency overdose treatment drug, Naloxone, without the requirement of a prescription.
