Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Amarillo, TX
With a surge in concern over substance abuse and deadly opioid overdose across Amarillo and the surrounding Texas state, state officials created the Addressing Substance Use in Texas Action Plan. This plan is used to outline various actions city, county, and state officials can take to curb the ongoing deadly drug use across the state. The plan was developed on three fronts—surveillance, resource development, and education.
Drug surveillance focuses on increasing data collection regarding substance abuse across Texas. The education component of the plan focuses on increasing education programs that train local and state officials, such as healthcare and public health staff, on various abuse concerns and prevention tactics. Lastly, the resource development component of this action plan works to increase the local accessibility to substance abuse resources, including counseling and drug treatment programs.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Amarillo, TX
Since March 1, 2020, pharmacists and prescribers operating in the state of Texas must follow new rules regarding the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). The Texas PMP is used to collect prescription data for all Schedule II, III, IV, and V controlled substances dispensed by pharmacies located in the state.
Under new 2020 regulations, all pharmacists and prescribers must check a patient's PMP history before issuing any prescription for opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol. This initiative comes as part of efforts to better identify substance abuse concerns in individuals as well as identify situations of potential prescription fraud.
