Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Allentown, PA
In July 2022, the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office announced that they would receive $1 million in state funding to better target the ongoing opioid crisis and its deadly impacts experienced across Allentown and the surrounding county area. These funds come from the Opioid Settlement Restricted Account, a $26 billion nationwide opioid settlement that was obtained after a federal ruling found multiple pharmaceutical companies responsible for fueling the ongoing opioid crisis.
With each Pennsylvania county signed onto the settlement, the state is expected to receive $1.07 billion from the settlement. Pennsylvania Senator Pat Browne stated that these funds are going to be used to help the Regional Intelligence and Investigation Center (RIIC) and enhance their investigative efforts surrounding opioid overdose deaths. These enhanced efforts will also work to better prosecute drug offenders and provide treatment service alternatives for those in need.
