Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Alexandria
In response to the area's ongoing opioid overdose problem, the Alexandria Health Department now distributes free fentanyl test strips and Narcan kits. The test strips can help users identify the presence of fentanyl, a potentially deadly drug. The Narcan kits can reverse deadly opioid overdoses. Residents can learn more about how to access these resources by calling 703-746-4888 or emailing opioids@alexandriava.gov.
In May 2023, the city's Department of Health began offering area restaurants Narcan training and kits. While participation is optional, the program's coordinators are hoping to have kits in about one-quarter of the city's restaurants by the end of 2023.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Alexandria, VA
Alexandria residents who are struggling with drug addiction and have had a brush with the law may benefit from participating in Alexandria Treatment Court (ATC). This program is designed for individuals who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe substance abuse disorder and have been charged with a non-violent felony. The five-phase program requires intensive supervision and treatment, with the ultimate goal of supporting participants' sobriety and recovery, enhancing public safety, and reducing recidivism.
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Alexandria
In May 2023, a drug dealer from Alexandria was sentenced to 15 years in prison for distributing more than 400 grams of fentanyl between July 2020 and June 2021 and his connection with two overdose deaths. The first was the death of a 22-year-old in October 2020. Although he admitted to selling the man counterfeit pills, he was not prosecuted and continued to sell fentanyl despite the victim's death. In May 2021, the dealer was connected to the death of a 26-year-old woman who consumed a fatal amount of fentanyl. It was this death that ultimately led to his arrest and sentencing.
