Alexandria, LA - Drug Testing

Life and People in Alexandria

After local resident Lillie Camille Harvey ("Millie") died from a fentanyl overdose in Alexandria City Park in 2017, her mother, Lilly Harvey, founded the Millie Mattered Overdose and Addiction Advocacy organization. When remembering her daughter, Harvey insists that she was "not a junkie" and that she "made a bad mistake one day, like so many people do."

Today, Harvey organizes memorials and other overdose educational events to bring awareness to the problem and provide fellowship for those who have been impacted by opioid overdoses. Her organization is also the catalyst behind "Millie's Law" (Senate Bill 315), which went into effect in August 2022. The law creates harsher penalties for dealers who sell fentanyl or fentanyl-laced products that lead to a person's death or bodily harm.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Alexandria

The streets are a bit safer now that an Alexandria man has been arrested on multiple drug and firearm charges. Following a drug enforcement raid, officials confiscated more than five pounds of methamphetamine, pills, and drug paraphernalia, including items used for packaging and selling drugs. The 42-year-old man was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center and held on $550,600 bond. Alexandria Police Chief Chad Gremillion commented on the case, saying "It takes a joint effort to take these drugs and these guns off the street."
