Albany, New York: Drug abuse trends
Albany falls under Albany County, which experienced a significant increase in opioid overdose deaths in 2020. Altogether, 99 people fatally overdosed during the year, setting a new record for the number of people who died from an opioid overdose in the county. Most were men in their 30s, but officials stated that the age range has stretched from 20 to 59-year-olds. Toxicology reports show that the biggest threat to Albany County is fentanyl. Reports indicated that 85 percent of overdoses included this extremely potent opioid.
In the past, fentanyl was most often spiked in heroin. Now, it has been increasingly mixed into other substances like cocaine, methamphetamine, and benzodiazepines. Even two milligrams of fentanyl can be deadly, and people usually do not even know they are taking it because other drugs are spiked without their knowledge. In Albany County alone, over 2,700 people received Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment in February of 2021.
